The paper is devoted to Xenophon, a student of Socrates, who is considered one of the main adherents of Socrates by Diogenes Laertius, Plato and Antisthenes (D.L. 2.47.2). Xenophon can hardly be deemed an exclusively Socratic author; he is equally well-known as an author of historical and biographical works, however, Socratic themes are present in the majority of his works in one way or another. Just as Plato’s dialogues, Xenophon’s works are literary creations, rather than historical accounts, thus, the characters of his writings, despite the latter’s ‘historicity,’ are literary characters. Most certainly, Socrates is the main and the most-discussed character of Xenophon’s so-called Socratic works, however, it must be noted that the choice of other characters (we are first and foremost interested in Socrates’ interlocutors in Memorabilia) is not accidental for Xenophon, and requires interpretation, which will be the primary focus of our attention.
