Peripetias of Reason and Passion in the Tragedy of Seneca Phaedra: Between Pathology and Philosophy
The philosophical ideal of Seneca, in which passion submits to reason, is considered in the context of its dramatic realization. The tragedy “Phaedra” allows its author to demonstrate the essential moments of the eternal human conflict between reason and passions. Seneca reflects the cosmological events in the mirror of individual existence and thus explores the relationship of logos and pathos. Extreme poles here are reasonable speech about the passions and passionate speech of reason.
