Divine Activities as Accident in Palamite Doctrine: Meaning, Historical Context, and the Context of Ideas on the Nature of Theological Language*

Gregory Palamas has faced a problem of compatibility of two theological provisions within his doctrine based on distinction in God of substance and non-created activities: that God is unalterable and that he acts (produces activities) accordingly with the time in relation to the created world, in particular, having made the created being. This background tended to determine polemical argumentations on possibility of signifying the non-created divine activities as accident.
I will examine a historical context of this topic and show a difference between the approaches of Gregory Palamas and his associate David Dishypatus in terms of understanding of the nature of theological language.
