The Practical Ethics of Middle Platonism: the theme of wealth in Plutarch's Vitae Lives

According to Plutarch, an exemplary statesman creates or restores harmony within the state and strives for the ideal. An important part of a politician's skill is managing his own household; a city can be viewed as a collection of individual households, and a politician's abilities can be assessed by his ability to manage both his own household and the entire policy, avoiding conflicts of interest. Plutarch was not seriously interested in the topic of the wealth of the entire state or individual people, but from time to time he touched on it in his Lives. The paper pays special attention to the biographies of Solon, Aristides, Cimon, Pericles, Nikias, Cato the Elder, Crassus, Lucullus. For Plutarch, the pursuit of profit is a vice, and the proper use of money deserves praise. He does not approve of the pursuit of wealth, as it distracts from public affairs and brings other dangers. Plutarch is far from thinking that one must necessarily be rich to engage in politics. These ideas are also found in his Precepts of Statecraft. For a politician, money is just one of tools to achieve goals, and for Plutarch as a writer, both poverty and wealth are the means by which one can show the essence of a person. Moving from the issue of poverty and wealth of individuals to society as a whole, Plutarch believes that the state does not necessarily have to be big or rich in order for its citizens to live happily.

Keywords: Middle Platonism, Plutarch, poverty, wealth, ethics
